What Is Uber?
Started in San Francisco in 2009, Uber is a ride-hailing app. It is known for being a cheaper and safer alternative to taxis. Ubers can be found in large cities all around the world, including in Hawaii.
How Can I Use Uber?
Using Uber is a fairly simple process. Follow the six steps listed below, and you'll be ready to go.
Step 1: Download the App
First, you need to pull out your smartphone and download the Uber app. It is available for download in both the App Store and Google Play.
Step 2: Create an Account
Then, you'll need to input some personal information, such as your name, phone number and payment information.
Step 3: Request a Ride
Then, you're ready to request a ride! Simply type the name of your destination into the search bar. From there, adjust your pick-up location. Usually, Uber will try to set the pick-up location at your current location, but you can adjust it if necessary.
Next, you'll need to select the type of vehicle that you would like. The most common is UberX, but there is also UberXL, UberBLACK, UberLUX, UberFAMILY, and UberPOOL. Press the "confirm" button once you have picked your desired type of Uber.
When a nearby driver has accepted your request, Uber will estimate the amount of time it will take your Uber drive to arrive at the designated pick-up spot.
Step 4: Verify Your Uber Driver
When the app indicated that the driver is nearby, you'll likely see a car that matches the description given in the app. Double check the car color, car type, and license plate. Then, wait until the driver confirms your name (rather than you saying his or her name) before entering the vehicle. Safety first!

Is There Uber in Hawaii?
There is Uber in Hawaii! However, depending on what island you are on, you may want to consider renting a car anyway.
The highest concentration of Ubers in Hawaii is on the island of Oahu, which makes sense, since it's the island with the most people. Ubers can get you pretty much anywhere on Oahu, as long as you don't head into super off-the-beaten path areas.
As for the other three main islands, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai, there are Ubers, but not nearly as many as there are on Oahu. If you are the kind of person that likes to go from the airport to the hotel and then spend your entire time lounging in the resort area, you could likely rely on the available Ubers on Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai. But if you plan on exploring the island at all, don't rely on Uber. Rent a car.
There are very few Ubers on the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. During my time on Lanai, there was one Uber on the entire island. Combine that with spotty phone service, and you won't want to leave your plans of exploration in the hands of Uber on Lanai and Molokai.
These same rules apply to Lyft in Hawaii as well.
*It is important to note that the number of Ubers in Hawaii have drastically decreased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is still mostly possible to get around on Oahu with just Uber, it's more difficult on the other islands. On top of that, the price of Uber in Hawaii has surged dramatically.
What Are the Transportation Alternatives to Uber in Hawaii?
Taxis (and Other Ride-Hailing Services)
The most obvious alternatives to Uber in Hawaii are taxis and other ride-hailing services, such as Lyft. Taxis are pretty much always a little more expensive than Uber in Hawaii. Lyft is comparable to Uber in Hawaii, so consider checking the fares on both apps before requesting a ride.
Rental Cars
If you plan on doing a lot of exploring or if you plan on visiting one of the more remote Hawaiian Islands, a rental car is a must. While renting a car in Hawaii can be quite expensive, the alternative is to simply not explore the islands at all (and that's not very fun).
The Bus
While there is public transportation available on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai, Oahu's public transportation is the only one that is not extremely limited. It would not be a good idea to rely on public transportation on Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai, as the hours and routes are minimal. However, on Oahu, relying on public transportation is doable.
On Oahu, a one-day pass for The Bus costs $5.50. The Bus can get you to most places on the island, even if it does take a lot of extra time. That said, if you are on a budget, you may want to consider taking the bus instead of using Ubers during your time on Oahu.

Uber on Oahu, Hawaii
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (Previously Honolulu International Airport) (HNL)
You can get an Uber at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)! If you are in Terminal 1, head to the median across from Lobby 2 on the departures level. If you are in Terminal 2, head to the median across from Lobby 8 on the departures level.
Uber on Maui, Hawaii
Kahului Airport (OGG)
As of 2019, you can get an Uber at Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui. To get picked up, head to the rideshare pick-up area between the rental car counters and baggage claim.
Uber on the Big Island, Hawaii
Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (Previously Kona International Airport) (KOA)
Uber is also available at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). The Kona airport is rather small, so it'll be easy to follow the signs to the designated rideshare pick-up area.
Hilo International Airport (ITO)
You can also get an Uber at Hilo International Airport (ITO). Just like Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KONA), the Hilo airport is rather small, so it is easy to follow the signs to the designated rideshare pick-up area.

Lihue Airport (LIH)
As of 2019, you can request an Uber at Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai. Simply follow the signs to the designated rideshare pick-up area.
Is Uber in Hawaii Expensive?
Just like pretty much everything else in Hawaii, Uber in Hawaii is more expensive than Uber in other places. For example, to cover the nine miles from the Honolulu Airport to Waikiki, it will cost approximately $40 to take an Uber. While that may seem pricey, Uber fares in Hawaii are still cheaper than taxis and comparable to other ride-hailing services, such as Lyft.
